Millers have experience, personnel to do something special
The 2016 version of the Noblesville Millers has the look of a promising season for the black and gold. Head Coach Justin Keever enters his 12th season at the helm of the storied baseball program at Noblesville High School and is looking to continue adding to the trophy case this spring.
This year's squad has 7 returning starters, 12 varsity letter winners, 9 seniors and an additional 7 seasoned players that had a significant amount of playing time at the varsity level in 2015.
Senior starting pitcher and Moorhead State-commit Cory Conway returns and looks to cement himself into Noblesville baseball history, even more than he did last season as a junior. Conway sported a 7-3 record with a 1.55 ERA, while striking out 93 batters in just 63.1 innings of work. The lanky lefty only gave up 52 hits and just 22 runs (14 earned) while leading the Miller pitching staff.
Butler-signee Connor Christman is the team's leading hitter entering his senior season. The Millers' third baseman batted at a .409 clip to lead last year's team, driving in 20 runs, scoring 25 times and also hitting his first career home run on the road at Brownsburg.
Junior Travis Gillian was a huge contributor as a sophomore in 2015, hitting .383 and tying Christman for the team lead with 36 hits. Gillian had 17 RBIs and scored 28 runs and also had 14 stolen bases.
Another junior that had a solid sophomore campaign was Bryce Masterson, who served as the DH in his first full season at the varsity level. Masterson hit .299, going 26-87, driving in 22 runs, scoring 11, smacking 5 doubles and belting 3 towering home runs, two of those coming in each game of an HCC doubleheader vs. Fishers.
Michael Carmosino is another seasoned veteran that will be looking to build on his junior season. Carmo batted .262, but was able to score 20 runs, drive in 14 runs, hit five doubles and also steal 11 bases, while having a stellar glove at second base and shortstop.
Senior Clayton Marowski (3-2, 3.86 ERA) and junior Harris Camp (1-1, 2.10 ERA) both return with a lot of experience as starting pitchers and look to contribute in the rotation.
Seniors Austin Shirley (DePauw commit) (14 runs, 16 RBI, 11 SB) and Ty Lindstrand (7 RBI, 8 runs), along with juniors Alex Cleverly (6 RBI) and Jackson Thurman (6 runs, 3 RBI) all look to be bigger parts of the Millers offensive lineup.
There are still 7 members of the 2014 4A State Championship team on this year's team. Carmosino, Christman, Shirley and Conway saw playing time at Victory Field on that Friday, June 20th night, but Gillian, Marowski and Cleverly were all on the bench cheering on their teammates. The leadership starts and continues down the line with those players.
With the Millers coming into the season preseason 4A #5, they're going to have some heavy competition this season with a lot of ranked foes on the slate.
Hamilton Southeastern (4A #1), Zionsville (4A #2), Cathedral (4A #3), Westfield (4A #7), Terre Haute North (4A #9), Wapahani (3A #2), Fishers (receiving votes) and New Castle (receiving votes) make up for 16 of Noblesville's 30 scheduled regular season games. It just goes to show that nothing is easy, by any means, in high school baseball!
